Despite loss, Regals close to claiming playoff berth

ST. CATHARINES – Despite a 10-7 loss to the St. Catharines Athletics Saturday at the Canada Games arena, the Guelph Regals have all but clinched a berth in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League playoffs.

The result leaves the Regals in fourth place in the Western Conference at 10-5-0. They trail the Six Nations Rebels (14-0-0), Elora Mohawks (14-2-0) and St. Catharines (12-2-0) and those three have clinched playoff berths.

Top eight qualify for the playoffs and the Wallaceburg Red Devils are ninth at 3-10-0 and can get 20 points at the most, the same total the Regals have after Saturday’s loss. The locals need one win in their final five games of the regular season or a loss by Wallaceburg to be assured of a spot in the playoffs.

Saturday, St. Catharines broke an early tie with four consecutive goals to lead 6-2 at the end of the first period and the hosts were ahead 8-6 after the second.

Marcus Keleher had three goals for the Regals while single goals were added by Dylan Davey, Charlie Boon, Cam Wheeldon and Dallon Evans. Ethan Keleher collected four assists while Marcus Keleher had two and Davey, Logan McLellan and Evans had one apiece.

Trent Mooradian struck for a hat trick for St. Catharines while Cody McNeil, Jack Perker, Jaden Patterson, Lucas Briscall, Landon Jeckles, Ian Kohut and Drew Kenney each fired in a goal. Patterson set up seven goals while Mooradian had three assists and McNeil had two. Single assists were awarded to Kohut and goalkeeper Mike Napoli.

The Regals outshot the Athletics 46-40 and went 3-for-6 on their power play while St. Catharines went 1-for-7.

Ty Fox-Trudel had 30 saves in net for Guelph while Napoli had 39 for the Athletics.

The Regals are to host the Owen Sound North Stars (6-7-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.

They’re also to host Wallaceburg Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., play at Six Nations Friday at 8 p.m., play at Owen Sound June 15 at 8 p.m. and host St. Catharines June 19 at 8 p.m. to wrap up their regular season.
