Eagles, Thunder advance to D4 senior girls’ hoops final

FERGUS – The Emmanuel Christian Eagles and the Westside Thunder are to battle in the District 4 high school senior girls’ basketball final Wednesday in Orangeville at Westside.

The Eagles and Thunder advanced to the final with semifinal victories on their home courts Monday.

Emmanuel Christian of Fergus squeezed by the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne 37-33 while the Thunder downed the Erin Raiders 40-27.

Tiffany Bouwers led Emmanuel Christian with 17 points while Paula Gaston had 12 for Centre Dufferin.

Westside received 17 points from Jessica Burnside and eight from Catherine McLean.

Kendra Swanzey had eight for Erin while Abi White added six.

Wednesday’s final at Westside is to start at 2:30 p.m.

The Thunder had finished first at the end of the regular season with a 9-1 record while the Eagles were second at 8-2.

During the regular season, Westside defeated Emmanuel Christian 31-25 in Orangeville Sept. 25 and 45-42 in Fergus Oct. 16.

The D4 championship game is for bragging rights as both teams will move on to CWOSSA championship tournaments, Westside going to the AA tournament at Galt CI in Cambridge Nov. 17 and 18 and Emmanuel Christian going to the A tournament at Woodland Christian School in Breslau Nov. 17.
