Elora Mohawks finish with flourish to get by Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE – The Elora Mohawks scored the final five goals of the game to rally for a 13-11 victory over the Cambridge Highlanders in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Galt Arena Gardens.

The host Highlanders scored twice in the first seven minutes of the third period to extend their lead to three goals before the Mohawks connected for their winning outburst.

JJ Lavigne struck for four goals for the Mohawks while Brinley Wilson had a hat trick, all three goals being scored in the final 12 minutes of the game. Carter Coffey, Owen Moore and Keegan Detweiler added two goals apiece while Moore, Jabe Verbeek and Wilson each had three assists. Lavigne, Coffey and Detweiler each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Ryan McDougall, Cole Doherty, Owen Williams, Trae Verbeek and Connor Willmets.

Ryder Roberson fired home four goals for Cambridge while Drake Neal had a hat trick and Nick Thomas, Tyler Graham, Jake Patterson and Carson Albert each had single goals. Neal and Ashton Lankowski gathered four assists apiece while Korbyn Haupert, Graham, Cole Main and Trey Weinstein each had two and Nick Thomas, Patterson, Roberson and Layakwas Kennedy had one each.

The Mohawks outshot the expansion Highlanders 76-51 and neither team netted a power-play goal in a game where penalties were limited to a total of five minors. Elora had three power plays and Cambridge had two.

Sam Forbes had 40 saves for the Mohawks while Mateo Beaudin had 63 for the Highlanders.

The win secured home-court advantage for the Mohawks in the Western Conference quarter-finals. Elora will finish anywhere from second to fourth in the conference.

The Six Nations Rebels have clinched a first-place finish as they’re undefeated at 18-0-0 while the Mohawks are second at 15-3-0. They’re followed by the St. Catharines Athletics at 13-3-1, Windsor Clippers at 13-5-0, Guelph Regals at 12-6-0, Hamilton Bengals at 9-8-1, Owen Sound North Stars at 8-9-0 and Cambridge at 8-10-0. They’ll be the eight teams qualifying for the playoffs although conference quarter-final pairings have not been decided.

Missing the playoffs will be the London Blue Devils (4-13-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (3-14-0), Welland Generals (2-16-0) and Point Edward Pacers (0-18-0).

The Mohawks have two games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to host St. Catharines at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus Thursday at 8 p.m. and play the Clipper in Windsor Saturday at 7 p.m. Neither is likely to be a first-round playoff opponent for Elora.
