Elora Mohawks in standoff with St. Catharines

The Elora Mohawks and St. Catharines Athletics battled to an 8-8 standoff in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Wednesday night at the Canada Games arena.

The Mohawks never trailed in the match and led by four goals with 14 minutes to go in regulation time, but penalties proved costly as the hosts scored three power-play goals as they rallied to send the game into overtime.

Elora scored 27 seconds into a 10-minute overtime period, but St. Catharines pulled even with 1:21 to go.

JJ Lavigne and Brinley Wilson each scored twice for the Mohawks while single goals were netted by Peyton Drone, Cole Hunsberger, Keegan Detweiler and Connor Willmets. Owen Moore and Wilson each had three assists while Detweiler had two assists. Lavigne, Evan McDougall, Hunsberger and Trae Verbeek each had one assist.

Trent Mooradian and Colton Armitage collected two goals apiece for the Athletics while Carter Accursi, Jack Parker, Jaden Patterson and Landon Jaeckle each added single goals. Patterson and Cody MacNeil each had four assists while Parker had two and Mooradian and Armitage had one apiece.

The Mohawks outshot St. Catharines 54-50 and had four power-play goals and a shorthanded marker. The Athletics had five power-play goals in the game.

Sam Forbes had 42 saves for Elora and Mike Napoli had 46 saves for St. Catharines.

The result leaves the Mohawks at 2-0-1 and St. Catharines at 1-0-1.

Next game for the Mohawks is set for next Thursday when they’re to play the London Blue Devils (1-1-0) at London’s Nichols Recreation Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
