Elora Mohawks jump ahead early in win over Guelph Regals

The Elora Mohawks grabbed the lead in the first period and never led it out of their grasp as they handed the Guelph Regals a 13-7 setback in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Friday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Mohawks scored in the opening minute and led 4-2 at the end of the first period and 9-5 after the second.

Keegan Detweiler led the Mohawks with three goals and four assists while Nate Renaud had three goals and one assist. JJ Lavigne added two goals and three assists while Owen Moore and Brinley Wilson each had a goal and four assists. Owen Tovell, Evan McDougall and Cole Hunsberger scored one goal apiece while Hunsberger had two assists and Evan McDougall, Carter Coffey and Ryan McDougall each had one assist.

Getting a goal apiece for the Regals were Dylan Goddard, Finn Morgan, Dylan Davey, Brett Vince, Tyler Beecraft, Ben Morton and Zachary Wright. Davey had five assists while Chase Forsythe and Sam Savery had two apiece. Single assists were awarded to Goddard, Vince, Logan Reyes, Morton and Nate Stocco.

Elora outshot Guelph 50-35.

Sam Forbes had 28 saves for the Mohawks and Connor Waller had 37 for the Regals.

Two power-play goals were scored in the game, both by Elora.

The result leaves the Regals at 14-2-1 (W-L-T) and the Regals at 8-9-0 and both have three games remaining in their regular seasons.

The Mohawks have three road games to go as they’re to play the Welland Generals (1-15-0) at Welland Sunday at 3 p.m., Cambridge Highlanders (12-4-0) at Cambridge Tuesday at 8 p.m. and the Windsor Clippers (6-10-0) at Windsor Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Regals are to host the London Blue Devils (5-11-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena, and play the Owen Sound North Stars (9-7-0) at Owen Sound Thursday at 8 p.m. and the Highlanders at Cambridge Saturday at 8 p.m.
