Elora Mohawks lock in second-place finish in conference

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks secured a second-place finish in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Western Conference Thursday when they downed the St. Catharines Athletics 11-8 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The game was a tale of two halves with the Mohawks dominating the first half of the match and St. Catharines taking control in the second half.

St. Catharines opened the scoring in the game’s opening minute, but Elora responded with 10 consecutive goals including four in a span of a minute and nine seconds late in the first period.

However, the visitors scored seven of the game’s final eight goals.

The Mohawks led 7-1 at the end of the first period and 10-4 after the second.

JJ Lavigne, Owen Moore, Keegan Detweiler and Trae Verbeek had two goals apiece for the Mohawks while single goals were added by Jabe Verbeek, Brinley Wilson and Connor Willmets. Brinley Wilson had five assists while Moore had four, Lavigne had three, Tobias Wilson, Detweiler and Willmets two each and Terrance Barrina, Carter Coffey and Jabe Verbeek one each.

Ian Kohut and Cody MacNeil netted two goals apiece for St. Catharines while Jack Parker, Ari Stenhuis, Colton Armitage and Landon Jeckles each had one. Parker and Armitage set up three goals apiece while Jaden Patterson had two assists and single assists were awarded to Ryan Andrews, Trent Mooradian, Christian Blaylock, Lucas Briscall, Kohut and MacNeil.

The Mohawks outshot the Athletics 51-42, but were scoreless on five power plays while St. Catharines went 1 for 3 on its power play.

Carter Browne, making his first start for the Mohawks since being obtained from the Brampton Excelsiors earlier in the week, had 34 saves while Jarred JoeJoe Brant had 37 for St. Catharines.

The result leaves Elora at 16-3-0 with one game to go. They can’t catch the Six Nations Rebels, the undefeated (19-0-0) conference leaders, or be caught by anyone from behind.

The Windsor Clippers are third at 14-5-0 and are followed by St. Catharines (13-4-1), Guelph Regals (13-6-0), Hamilton Bengals, (9-8-1), Cambridge Highlanders (8-11-0) and Owen Sound North Stars (8-10-0). They’ll be playoff participants when the postseason starts next week.

Playoff spectators will be the London Blue Devils (4-14-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (4-14-0), Welland Generals (2-16-0) and Point Edward Pacers (0-19-0).

The Mohawks will play either Hamilton, Cambridge or Owen Sound in the conference quarter-finals.

The Mohawks are to complete their regular season Saturday with a 7 p.m. game in Windsor against the Clippers.
