Elora Mohawks rally to slip by Owen Sound

OWEN SOUND – The Elora Mohawks rebounded from a two-goal deficit with five consecutive goals on their way to an 8-6 victory over the Owen Sound North Stars in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Thursday night at the Bayshore Community Centre.

The win clinched a playoff berth for the Mohawks.

The teams scored three goals apiece in the first period before Owen Sound scored twice in the first minute and a half of the second period. After a scoreless stretch of just over 12 minutes, the Mohawks scored three times late in the period to go ahead for good and take a 6-5 advantage into the final period.

Tobias Wilson hit for a hat trick for the Mohawks while Evan McDougall added two goals. Single goals were netted by JJ Lavigne, Brinley Wilson and Jabe Verbeek. Brinley Wilson also had four assists while Lavigne had three, Tobias Wilson and Owen Moore had two apiece and McDougall and Connor Willmets had one each.

Carter Moran had three goals and two assists for Owen Sound while other goal scorers were Joel Coghlin, Everest L’Homme Wickens and Curtis Arnold. Tyson Morrison collected four assists while L’Homme Wickens had three, Elliot Thomson had two and Coghlin had one.

Shots on goal were not recorded.

The Mohawks went 2-for-3 on their power play while Owen Sound went 3-for-5.

Sam Forbes picked up the win in net for Elora while Nick Sanderson was in goal for the North Stars.

The result leaves the Mohawks at 13-2-0 and in second place in the Western Conference, behind only the Six Nations Rebels. Owen Sound is seventh at 5-7-0.

The Mohawks are to host the Wallaceburg Red Devils (3-9-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus.

The North Stars are to host the Point Edward Pacers (0-13-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. and play the Guelph Regals (10-4-0) at the Victoria Road arena Sunday at 3 p.m.
