Elora Mohawks use power play to drop Six Nations Rebels

The Elora Mohawks connected for nine power-play goals as they dropped the Six Nations Rebels 17-7 in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

The Mohawks had a seven-goal run that started in the first period and ended in the second.

Elora led 5-1 at the end of the first period and 10-4 after the second.

League scoring leader Brinley Wilson turned in a 10-point performance with six goals and four assists for the Mohawks. He has 40 goals and 39 assists in 11 league games to hold an eight-point lead on Jaden Patterson of the St. Catharines Athletics who has 20 goals and 51 assists in 10 games.

JJ Lavigne collected a hat trick for Elora while Aidan McDougall, Cole Hunsberger and Connor Willmets scored twice each. Owen Moore and Keegan Detweiler each had a goal and five assists and Evan McDougall assisted on nine goals. Hunsberger had four assists while Aidan McDougall had two and Owen Tovell and Lavigne had one apiece.

Owen Vanloon scored three times for Six Nations while Joe Squire, Damon Decaire, Layton MacDonald and Kariwanoro Squire each fired home a goal.

The Mohawks outshot the Rebels 56-40.

Sam Forbes had 33 saves for Elora while Ryder Johnson had 35 saves and Mason Jacobs had four in the final 4:08 of the game.

While Elora had nine power-play goals, Six Nations had three.

The Mohawks lead the Mid-West Division with an 8-1-1-1 (W-L-T-OTL) record while Six Nations is third in the South-West Division at 5-5-0-0.

The Mohawks have three games on their schedule this week as they’re to play the Hamilton Bengals (8-1-0-0) at Hamilton’s Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena Thursday at 8 p.m. and host the Welland Generals (1-8-0-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Point Edward Pacers (1-8-0-0) Sunday at 4 p.m. Both home games are to be played at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.
