Elora Rocks nip Orangeville with last-minute goal

ORANGEVILLE – Chad Herron’s goal with nine seconds to go lifted the Elora Rocks to a 4-3 victory over the Orangeville Blitz in Western Ontario Super Hockey League play Saturday at the Alder Arena.

Each team held the lead at some point in the game. Orangeville scored the lone goal of the first period, but the Rocks responded with a pair of goals in the second. Elora added a goal to its lead early in the third before Orangeville pulled even with five minutes to go with two goals a little under six minutes apart.

Brendan Woods had two goals for Elora while Yianni Skropolis had the other goal while single assists were awarded to Zack Cameron, Jeff White, Luke Hoelscher, Keaton McLaughlin, Spencer MacCormack and Spencer Gourlay.

Scoring for Orangeville were Jake Stoneham, Cody Martel and Matlock Bobechko while Nathan Roe, Derek Meikle and Nicholas Rotatore each had a single goal.

The Rocks outshot the Blitz 46-28 and Elora went 1-for-5 on their power-play while Orangeville was scoreless on its lone power play.

The result leaves the Rocks fifth in the 11-team league at 7-5-0-0 and the Blitz 11th at 1-12-0-0.

The Rocks are to play the Petrolia Squires (8-3-0-0) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Petrolia’s Greenwood Recreation Centre.

The Blitz are to host the league-leading Tillsonburg Thunder (9-2-0-0) Saturday at 8 p.m. in their second of four consecutive league outings at Alder Arena. They’re also is in the midst of a stretch of 10 home games in 13 league outings.
