Elora Rocks nipped by Strathroy in season opener

STRATHROY – The Elora Rocks were edged 5-4 by the Strathroy Jets in their WOSHL season opener Friday night at Strathroy’s Gemini Centre.

All nine goals were scored in the first period and all 12 minutes in penalties called in the game were also called during the first period, according to the box score on the league’s website.

Strathroy had a 3-0 lead before the game was eight minutes old, but a pair of power-play goals by the Rocks 32 seconds apart helped narrow the gap.

Chad Herron, Spencer MacCormack, Anthony Filoso and Joey Heath scored a goal apiece for the Rocks while Jeff White and Alex Uttley each had two assists. Blaize Bridges, Steven Dol and MacCormack each had one assist.

Mike Vandenelzen hit for a pair of goals for Strathroy while single goals were added by Justin McIntyre, Tyler Coleman and Kobe Ferreira. Getting one assist apiece were Mike Mandarelli, Colin Van Rooyen, Ferreira, Stuart Ireland, Matt Laberge, Noah Bruinink and Coleman.

Shots on net were not reported.

Strathroy went 1-for-2 on its power play while the Rocks went 3-for-4. The Jets also had a shorthanded goal, the game-winner by Coleman.

Goaltenders were Colin Dunne of the Rocks and Evan Debrouwer of Strathroy.

The Jets and Petrolia Squires lead the league at 2-0-0-0 while the Dunnville Aeros are at 1-0-0-0. The Rocks, Tilbury Bluebirds and Orangeville Blitz are each at 0-1-0-0 while the Woodstock Lakers are at 0-2-0-0. The Tillsonburg Thunder, Stratford Fighting Irish, Alvinston Killer Bees and Delhi Flames are to begin their regular seasons Saturday.

Next game for the Rocks is Friday when they’re to host Orangeville at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
