Elora Rocks romp to win in return to their home arena

ELORA – The Elora Rocks connected for six goals in the second period as they had a victorious return to the Jefferson Elora Community Centre Friday night.

The Rocks dropped the Petrolia Squires 8-1 in Western Ontario Super Hockey League play, their first game at the Elora arena since the start of last season’s playoffs. The Rocks played their home games at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus while their home arena underwent renovations.

Elora gave up the first goal of the game before storming back for the victory. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first and the Rocks led 7-1 after the second.

Chad Herron and Zack Cameron scored twice apiece for the Rocks while single goals were netted by Brock Hoelscher, Nick Tetley, Anthony Filoso and Matteo Condotta. Brendan Woods, Andrew Brubacher, Joey Heath and Alex Utlley each had two assists while Spencer MacCormack, Tetley and Filoso had one apiece.

Ryan Trottier had an unassisted goal for Petrolia midway through the first period.

The Rocks outshot the Squires 43-30 including a 20-7 advantage in the second period. Elora went 2-for-4 on its power play and held Petrolia scoreless on four power plays.

Colin Dunne had 29 saves for the Rocks while Brandon Campbell had 35 for Petrolia.

The result leaves Elora in eighth place at 9-9-2 (W-L-OTL) and Petrolia second at 13-8-0.

The Rocks have four games remaining on their regular-season schedule. They’re to play the Tillsonburg Thunder at the Tillsonburg Community Centre Tuesday in a rescheduled game and they’re to host the Delhi Flames Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the Woodstock Lakers Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m., both of those games to be played in Elora. The Rocks are to complete their regular season Feb. 17 with a game against the defending champion Stratford Fighting Irish Feb. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Stratford’s William Allman Arena.
