Erin Outlaws victorious in a shootout in inaugural game

ERIN – The Erin Outlaws needed a shootout to claim a victory in their first ever outing.

The Outlaws, who were formed in the summer after the Erin Blitz of the Western Ontario Super Hockey League moved their base to Orangeville, edged the Ripley Wolves 5-4 in a shootout in their debut in the Ontario Elite Hockey League Saturday night at Erin’s Centre 2000 arena.

The OEHL consists mainly of teams that competed in the Western Ontario Athletic Association’s senior men’s league and it is the Ontario Hockey Association’s senior AA league.

Saturday, the Outlaws rebounded from a one-goal deficit after the first period.

Ripley led 3-2 at the end of the opening period, but the Outlaws rallied for a 4-3 lead at the end of the second. The Wolves scored the lone goal of the third to force the game into overtime.

After the five-minute extra period went scoreless, Erin won it when Jacob Coulson scored the lone goal of the shootout.

Jacob Miller, Justin Pringle, Joey Warywoda and Brad Holman had single goals in regulation time for the Outlaws while Lucas Schott had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Miller, Pringle, Warywoda and Coulson.

Ripley received single goals from Logan Swanton, Kyle Durrer, Dan Nicoloff and Mike Howes. Getting one assist each were Todd Hellyer, Durrer, Derek Skinner, Evan Visser and Pat Looby.

The Outlaws outshot the Wolves 39-37 and both teams went 1-for-8 on their power plays.

Jacob Tugnutt had 33 saves for Erin while Jason Hamilton had 35 for Ripley.

The Outlaws are to play the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks (2-0-0-0) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Port Elgin Arena.
