Fade in middle stages costly for Gryphon hoops men

OTTAWA – A fade in the middle two quarters of the game proved to be their undoing as the Guelph Gryphons suffered a 76-64 loss to the UQAM Citadins in the Carleton House Laughton Preseason Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Gryphs were outscored by 15 points in those two quarters — six in the second quarter and nine in the third quarter – in the setback.

The teams were tied 19-19 at the end of the opening quarter before UQAM grabbed a 38-32 leads by halftime. The Citadins extended that lead to 58-43 by the end of the third quarter.

Guelph’s largest lead of the game was three points and it came 25 seconds into the second quarter. Less than a minute and a half later, UQAM went ahead for good.

Dylan McFee led the Gryphs with 14 points while Dezayne Mingo had 13 and Emmanuel Ansah added 11. McFee, Ansah and Shaathon Walker each grabbed four rebounds while Luke Trojanowski had three assists and three steals. Mingo had Guelph’s lone block.

Karl Tommy Laforest hit for 20 points for UQAM while Jean Mcfadden and Aidara Bahaide each had 16 and Civil Kevin had 11. Laforest also had 12 rebounds and two blocks and was one of four players with a steal, Kevin, Diaz Steeven and Mcfadden being the others.

The Gryphs shot 32 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers and 78 percent on free throws and also had 10 points in the paint, 18 off turnovers, eight on second chances, three on fast breaks and 26 from the bench.

UQAM shot 44 percent on field goals, 14 percent (3 of 21) on three-pointers and 74 percent on free throws. The Citadins also had 38 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, 11 on second chances and 21 from the bench.

The loss was the second in as many days at the tournament for the Gryphs who are 2-6 in the preseason. They’re to complete their time in the tournament and their preseason with a match against the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday.

The Gryphs are to open their OUA regular season Nov. 3 with an 8 p.m. game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. They’re also to host the defending national champion Carleton Ravens at the GGAC Nov. 4 at 8 p.m.
