Falcons, Ross capture wins in girls’ rugby openers

The Centre Wellington Falcons and Ross Royals opened the District 4/10 girls’ rugby season with wins as high school sports made its return after its early spring break.

The Falcons edged the Centennial Spartans 15-12 in Fergus while the Royals ran by the host Orangeville Bears 50-0.

The teams are four of the five combatants in the league’s Pool B – Guelph CVI Green Gaels are the other one — while Pool A teams are to get their starts Wednesday and Thursday as the St. James Lions are to play the defending champion Centre Dufferin Royals in Shelburne Wednesday and the Bishop Macdonell Celtics are to host the Erin Raiders at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field Thursday.

The Falcons started the scoring with the lone try of the first half and the teams swapped tries and the lead throughout the second half.

Sophia Farrow had a pair of tries for Centre Wellington while Faith Willmet scored the other one.

Zoe Cantelon had a try and a convert for the Spartans while Brynley Huesher also scored a try.

 

Ross 50 Orangeville 0

The Royals scored seven tries in the match.

Hagarty led Ross with 14 points while Pembleton and Sarabura each had 10.
