Fast start powers Gryphon field hockey women to win

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons burst out of the blocks with four goals in the first quarter on their way to a 5-2 victory over the McMaster Marauders in OUA women’s field hockey play Wednesday night at McMaster’s Alumni Field.

The teams added a goal apiece in the second quarter while McMaster’s third-quarter goal completed the scoring in the game.

Abigail Warriner scored twice for the Gryphs while single goals were added by Elly Peters, Bridget West and Delaney Jacklin. Eva Cuddihy and Peters each had an assist.

Darcie Brohman and Serena Uppal scored unassisted goals for McMaster.

The Gryphs outshot the Marauders 13-9 while McMaster took 16 penalty corners, seven more than Guelph.

The result keeps the Gryphs second in the West Division at 4-2-1 and McMaster in third at 2-5-0. Waterloo Warriors lead at 5-1-0 while the Western Mustangs are fourth at 1-5-0.

The Gryphs and Marauders are to clash again Friday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 7 p.m.
