Fedel, Gryphon hockey women blank York Lions

GUELPH – Martina Fedel stopped all shots sent her way as the Guelph Gryphons blanked the York Lions 4-0 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

Fedel had 15 saves to get the shutout.

It was scoreless for almost half the game until the Gryphs struck for three goals in two minutes and 46 seconds to grab a 3-0 lead by the end of the second period.

Only other goal in the game was an empty-netter with 2:58 to go in the third.

Reese Coffey, Tori Verbeek, Katherine Heard and Hannah Tait had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Jaime Magoffin and Maya Graham each had two assists and Heard and Tait had one each.

The Gryphs had 24 shots on the York net guarded by Emma Wedgewood.

While York was scoreless on three power plays, the Gryphs went 1-for-5.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 4-1-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) while York falls to 1-0-0-5.

The Gryphs have two road games on their schedule for next weekend as they’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues (2nd in OUA East at 3-1-0-2) at Toronto’s Varsity Arena Friday at 7 p.m. and the Waterloo Warriors (3rd in OUA West at 3-2-0-2) at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields arena Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
