Fergus Thistles down two in conference semifinal with Wilmot

BADEN – The Fergus Thistles will be out to try to prevent being swept out of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs by the Wilmot Wild when they meet in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals Saturday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

Wilmot grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series Thursday with a 15-6 victory at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

Wilmot responded to a two-goal lead by the Thistles midway through the first period with eight consecutive goals.

The Wild led 6-4 after the first period and 10-5 after the second. Wilmot won the first game of the series 16-6 Tuesday in Baden and have outscored the Thistles 13-3 in the third periods of the two games.

Riley Woods had two goals for the Thistles Thursday while single goals were added by Tye Sanderson, Blake Harrison, Brodie Rice and Evan McDougall. Five of Fergus’s goals were unassisted while Cooper Fleet had the Thistles’ lone assist of the game.

Chase Forsythe had five goals for Wilmot to equal his total in Game 1 of the series. He had one goal against Fergus in the regular season.

E.J. Keleher had four goals for the Wild in Thursday’s game while Eric Snyder scored twice. Getting a goal apiece were Eric Chilton, Landon Krysko, Justin Brennecke and Etienne Brind’Amour. Troy MacDonald assisted on four of the goals while Snyder and Jack Buiter each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Keleher, Ethan Warden, Chilton, Brennecke and Brind’Amour.

Wilmot outshot Fergus 68-33 and scored five power-play goals with three of them coming in the final three minutes of the game. The Thistles had a shorthanded goal.

Carter Billings had 53 saves for the Thistles while Aidan Kelly had 27 for the Wild.

Game time Saturday is 7 p.m.

If the Thistles win that game, Game 4 is to be held Sunday at Fergus starting at 2 p.m.
