Fergus Thistles fall behind early in loss to Orangeville

ORANGEVILLE – The Fergus Thistles yielded five goals in each of the first two periods as they were downed 13-5 by the Orangeville Northmen in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Saturday at the Tony Rose Arena.

The hosts led 5-1 at the end of the first period and 10-3 after the second.

Logan Joyes fired in a hat trick for the Thistles while Brodie Rice and Cooper Fleet also scored. Fleet collected a pair of assists while Aiden McDougall, Blake Harrison, Derek Kurtz and Spencer Aitchison had one apiece.

Josh Presley had five goals for Orangeville while Zach Dorval added a hat trick. Getting one goal apiece were Daniel Dorval, Luke Downard, Lyle MacNeil, Jack Fitzpatrick and Owen Kelly. Fitzpatrick gathered five assists while Downard collected three and Devan Doig, Nick Haladuick and Kelly picked up two each. Single assists were awarded to Zach Dorval, Cameron McClintock, Teague Landers and Keaton Walsh.

Orangeville outshot the Thistles 53-35 and the Northmen had five power-play goals and two shorthanded goals. Elora had one power-play marker.

Eric Krauter had 40 saves for Fergus while Jacob Hand had 30 for Orangeville.

Wilmot Wild lead the Western Conference at 13-2-0 and are followed by the Six Nations Stealth (9-5-0), Barrie Bombers (9-7-0), Orangeville (8-6-0), the Thistles (5-10-0), Brantford Warriors (4-9-1) and Halton Hills Bulldogs (3-12-1).

Fergus and Orangeville are to meet again Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. That game is one of three left on the Thistles’ regular-season schedule as they’re to play Barrie at the Arthur Community Centre Friday at 8 p.m. and battle Halton Hills at Georgetown’s Moldmasters Sportsplex June 26 at 8 p.m.
