Fergus Thistles ground Bombers to open playoffs

BARRIE – The Fergus Thistles opened the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs with a 9-6 victory over the Barrie Bombers Sunday at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre.

The Thistles, who scored six goals in the second period, never trailed in the game.

Fergus led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 8-4 after the second.

Aiden McDougall connected for a hat trick for the Thistles while single goals were added by Evan McDougall, Derek Kurtz, Jesse Peate, Nate Renaud, Rory Peters and Eddie McDonald. Evan McDougall collected five assists while Aiden McDougall had three, Renaud and Tye Sanderson each had two and Josh Peters had one.

Bo Bitzer, Graham Nash and Tye Burke scored twice apiece for Barrie while Jackson Andrews had three assists, Carter Barrie and Cameron MacKinnon had two apiece and Bitzer, Nash and Andrew Dafoe each had one.

Barrie outshot the Thistles 47-45 and Fergus had the lone power-play goal of the game.

Carter Billings had 41 saves for the Thistles while Kalib Anglin-Ramm had 36 for Barrie.

The Bombers had finished third in the Western Conference at 11-7-0 while the Thistles were sixth at 5-13-0 and had entered the playoffs on a four-game losing skid.

Barrie had taken all three regular-season meetings between the teams as they’d won 13-7 in the season opener April 29 at Barrie and had twice beaten the Thistles 11-10 – June 11 in Fergus and June 23 in Arthur.

Second game of the best-of-five conference quarter-final is to go Tuesday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex. Game time is 8 p.m.

Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. at Barrie’s Peggy Hill Centre while Game 4, if it’s needed, is to be played Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fergus.
