Fergus Thistles knocked out of playoffs by Wilmot Wild

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles were ousted from the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs Saturday night when they were handed a 9-5 setback by the Wilmot Wild at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The win gave Wilmot a three-game sweep of the best-of-five Western Conference semifinal.

The Wild scored the first four goals of the game to grab a lead that would never shrink to less than three goals the remainder of the way.

Wilmot led 5-2 at the end of the first period and 8-5 after the second.

Evan McDougall had a hat trick for Fergus while Aiden McDougall and Derek Kurtz also scored. Tye Sanderson assisted on three of the goals while Aiden McDougall and Spencer Aitchison each had two assists. Cameron Pelkie and Evan McDougall each had one assist.

Chase Forsythe had three goals for Wilmot while Eric Snyder and E.J. Keleher scored twice each and Troy MacDonald and Etienne Brind’Amour added single goals. Ethan Warden set up three of the goals while Keleher and Justin Brennecke each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Snyder, MacDonald, Jack Buiter and Eric Chilton.

The Wild outshot the Thistles 52-33 and had five power-play goals while Fergus had two power-play markers.

Eric Krauter started in net and made 25 saves while Carter Billings had 18 saves in the third. Aiden Kelly had 28 saves in the game for Wilmot.

The score was closer than the first two games, both played at the Wilmot Recreation Centre in Baden where the Wild won by 16-6 and 15-6 scores.

The Wild advances to the conference final where they’ll play either the Orangeville Northmen or Six Nations Stealth. Orangeville won the first game of that conference semifinal Friday at home while Game 2 is to go Sunday afternoon at Six Nations.
