Fergus Thistles left behind by Bulldogs’ run

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles were held to a single goal in the second half of the game as they dropped their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League home opener 11-6 to the Halton Hills Bulldogs Friday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Thistles scored three times in the final two minutes of the first period to grab a 4-3 lead and added to it with a power-play goal early in the second. They continued to lead by two goals midway through the second when Halton Hills started a nine-goal run to gain control of the match.

The Bulldogs led 9-5 at the end of the second and scored two goals 55 seconds apart with just less than seven minutes to go in the game. Fergus completed the scoring 28 seconds after the final goal by Halton Hills.

Aiden McDougall had a hat trick for the Thistles while Evan McDougall scored twice and Jarrett Lavigne had the other goal. Evan McDougall also had three assists while Logan Joyes had two and Aiden McDougall, Tye Sanderson, Cooper Fleet and Lavigne each had one.

Zakary Marshall, Zachary Wright, Ethan Hayens and Jacob Coleman struck for two goals apiece for Halton Hills while single goals were added by Tye Ingram, Matthew Labute and Jacob Tarr. Marshall and Nolen Peet had two assists apiece while single assists went to Wright, Hayens, Labute, Caleb Cripps and Tarr.

Halton Hills outshot Fergus 44-31 and went 2-for-4 on its power play while the Thistles went 1-for-3 as penalty calls were minimal with a total of 18 minutes assessed, 10 for the hosts and eight for Halton Hills.

Eric Krauter had 33 saves in net for the Thistles while Carter Stephens had 25 for Halton Hills.

The result leaves the Thistles continuing to look for their first win of the season as they previously lost twice on the road. Halton Hills improves to 1-3-0.

The Thistles have a bit of time to prepare for their next two games, both road games, as they’re to play the Six Nations Stealth (2-0-0) at the Gaylord Powless Arena May 14 at 2 p.m. and the Wilmot Wild (2-0-0) at the Plattsville Arena May 18 at 8 p.m.
