Fergus Thistles left behind by Wilmot in series opener

BADEN – The Fergus Thistles surrendered eight goals in the third period as they were downed 16-6 by the Wilmot Wild in the opening game of their best-of-five Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal Tuesday at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

Wilmot had led 8-4 heading into the third. The Thistles kept up their scoring trend in the third as Fergus scored twice in each period in the game.

The Wild had led 3-2 at the end of the opening frame.

Levi Wilson and Evan McDougall led the Thistles with two goals apiece while Tye Sanderson and Nate Renaud also scored. Evan McDougall set up three of the goals while single assists were awarded to Aiden McDougall, Wilson, Nathan Henderson, Sanderson and Cooper Fleet.

Chase Forsythe struck for five goals for Wilmot while Eric Snyder and Etienne Brind’Amour netted two goals apiece. Single goals were added by Owyn Smith, Zakary Holmes, E.J. Keleher, Jacob O’Sullivan, Ethan Warden, Eric Chilton and Justin Bennecke. Snyder had three assists while Troy MacDonald, Forsythe and Bennecke each had two and Smith, Holmes, Warden, Jack Buiter, Chilton, Everett Herder and Brind’Amour each had one.

Wilmot outshot Fergus 66-34 and had four power-play goals and two shorthanded tallies. The Thistles had a power-play goal and two shorties.

Carter Billings had 50 saves for the Thistles while Aiden Kelly had 28 for Wilmot.

The Wild had finished first in the conference at 16-2-0 and had a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. Fergus had finished sixth at 5-13-0 and had ousted the third-place Barrie Bombers (11-7-0) with a 3-1 series win in the conference quarter-finals.

Second game of the conference semifinal is to go Thursday at Baden starting at 8 p.m.

Third game is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
