Fergus Thistles nipped as Barrie nets quick trio in third

FERGUS – Three goals in a span of 65 seconds early in the third period helped lift the Barrie Bombers to an 11-10 victory over the Fergus Thistles in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

That trio of goals turned a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead for Barrie with 14 and a half minutes to go in the third. The Thistles scored with 9:43 to go to cut the gap to a single goal, but that was to be the final goal of the game.

Barrie led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 8-7 after the second.

Aiden McDougall had four goals and two assists for the Thistles while Evan McDougall had two goals and three assists. Logan Joyes had a goal and two assists while Brodie Rice had a goal and an assist and Spencer Aitchison and Jarrett Lavigne each had a goal. Derek Kurtz had four assists while Tye Sanderson and Cooper Flett each had two assists and Nate Long and Josh Peters each had one.

Tye Burke had a hat trick for Barrie while Myles Shorey, Cameron MacKinnon and Jake Hales tallied twice apiece and Chase Hughes and Josh Coughlin fired in one apiece. Carter Barrie had four assists for Barrie while Ryan Prestwich, Bo Bitzer, Shorey and Burke had two each and Graham Nash and Andrew Dafoe had one each.

The Bombers outshot the Thistles 59-48 mainly due to a 22-13 advantage in the third period.

Each team was assessed a minor penalty in the game and neither scored a power-play goal, although Barrie had a shorthanded goal.

Eric Krauter had 48 saves for the Thistles while Kalib Anglin-Ramm had 38 for Barrie.

Wilmot Wild lead the Western Conference at 11-2-0 while the Six Nations Stealth are at 8-4-0 and Barrie is at 8-6-0. They’re followed by the Orangeville Northmen at 7-6-0, Brantford Warriors are at 4-8-1, the Thistles are at 4-8-0 and Halton Hills Bulldogs are at 2-10-1.

The Thistles are to host Wilmot Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
