Fergus Thistles rally for win over Six Nations Stealth

The Fergus Thistles struck for four goals including the final two of the game as they nipped the Six Nations Stealth 8-7 Friday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The game was the first for the Thistles on their home court this season due to the long, successful season of the Ontario junior C hockey champion Fergus Whalers. All of the Thistles’ previous ‘home’ games were played at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

Friday, Six Nations led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-4 after the second.

The teams traded the lead in the third, Fergus going up 6-5 before the Stealth scored two in a row to shoot ahead 7-6 with nine minutes to go.

Eight players scored for the Thistles – Jacob Middleton, Brendan Gerber, Damien Ramirez, Lucas MacKinnon, Cameron Pelkie, Brody Peate, Hayden Sikkes and Braiden Wilton. Sikkes had three assists while Ramirez, Ryerson Doucette and Griffin Mackie each had two and Gerber, Peate and Wilton had one apiece.

Ryker Powless had a hat trick for Six Nations while Brian Laforme tallied twice and single goals were added by Cooper Anderson and Will Rowe. Noah McQueen assisted on two goals while Jake Skye, Randon Greene, Anderson, Rowe and Powless had one assist apiece.

The teams each took 47 shots in the game and had two power-play goals apiece while the Stealth also had a shorthanded marker.

Ryan Rooney had 40 saves for Fergus and Kayden Hearn had 39 for Six Nations.

The Thistles are to host the Orangeville Northmen Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elora.
