Fergus Whalers battle Kincardine Bulldogs to standoff

FERGUS – Jack McDonald’s goal with 4:13 to go in the third period lifted the Fergus Whalers to a 4-4 stalemate with the Kincardine Bulldogs in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The goal allowed the Whalers to get a point out of a game they led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second. A seven-minute overtime period failed to produce a winner.

McDonald, Keegan Clarke, Nolan Burnside and Ty Anselmini each had a goal for Fergus while Anselmini also had two assists. Single assists were awarded to JJ Lavigne, McDonald, Kyle Parsons, Burnside, Ryan Oakes and Jett Morningstar.

Jordan Moulton, Gavin Downs, Kieran Moore and Carter Servais scored the goals for Kincardine. Cooper Schneider and Servais each had two assists while Jordan Beisel, Liam Colhoun and Moulton had one apiece.

The Bulldogs outshot the Whalers 33-30 thanks to a 7-3 margin in overtime. Both teams netted a pair of power-play goals, Fergus on four power plays and Kincardine on five.

Jacob McKenney had 29 saves for Fergus while Rowen Cherrett had 26 for Kincardine.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 4-0-0-0 while the Wingham Ironmen and Walkerton Capitals are each at 3-1-0-0, the Whalers are at 2-1-0-1 and Kincardine is at 1-1-1-1. Trailing are the Mitchell Hawks at 1-3-0-0, Mount Forest Patriots at 0-2-1-0 and Goderich Flyers at 0-3-0-0.

The Whalers are to play the Barons at Hanover’s P and H Centre Friday at 8 p.m.
