Fergus Whalers claim OT win in first ever league outing

MOUNT FOREST – The Fergus Whalers worked overtime and received a stellar performance from goalkeeper Bradley Boville as they edged the Mount Forest Patriots 2-1 in their inaugural Provincial Junior Hockey League game Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Whalers never trailed in their first ever regular season game.

Fergus scored the lone goal of the first period while Mount Forest tied it at 7:36 of the third.

Jack McDonald scored the winner at 4:35 of overtime. Jett Morningstar and Ryan McDougall assisted on the goal.

Nolan Burnside scored an unassisted goal for the Whalers in the third minute of the game.

Brody Leblanc pulled the Patriots even in the third. Assisting on the goal were Owen Tovell and Jaxon Gawel.

The Patriots outshot the Whalers 57-20 as Fergus was held to less than eight shots in each period.

Boville picked up the win with 56 saves while Nolan Brown had 18 for Mount Forest.

While the Patriots were not penalized in the match, Fergus was assessed 10 minutes in penalties.

The Whalers are to host the Mitchell Hawks today (Sept. 17) at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. Game time is 3 p.m. Mitchell was handed a 5-3 setback by the Hanover Barons in their home opener Saturday.

The Patriots are to play the Walkerton Capitals at the Walkerton Community Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m. Walkerton doubled the Wingham Ironmen 4-2 at Wingham Friday night and were blanked by the Kincardine Bulldogs at Kincardine Saturday night.
