Fergus Whalers clip Mitchell with second-period goal

MITCHELL – A second-period goal turned out to be the lone goal of the game as the Fergus Whalers edged the Mitchell Hawks 1-0 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play on Family Day Monday at the Mitchell Arena.

Ethan Meeker scored that goal with help from Jack McDonald.

Bradley Boville stopped 21 shots to get the shutout as the Whalers completed a sweep of their three-in-three holiday weekend.

Tomas Brintnell had 37 saves Mitchell.

While the win was the third of the weekend for Fergus, it was also the fourth in a row for the Whalers who have secured a fourth-place finish in the Pollock Division and home-ice advantage in the quarter-finals. They’re to play either the Walkerton Capitals or Wingham Ironmen in that series.

Hanover Barons lead the division at 35-4-0-2 (W-L-OTL-T) and head the Mount Forest Patriots (31-7-2-0), Kincardine Bulldogs (22-12-2-5), the Whalers (19-16-3-2), Walkerton (18-20-2-2), Wingham (16-20-3-1), Mitchell (11-25-3-2) and Goderich Flyers (3-34-2-2).

The Whalers are to complete their inaugural regular season with a pair of games on the weekend. They’re to host Wingham in their final home game of the regular season Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex and they’re to finish the campaign Saturday at 2 p.m. against Kincardine at the Lucknow Arena.
