Fergus Whalers clobber Goderich for first win of October

FERGUS – It took until their final game of the month for the expansion Fergus Whalers to record their first Provincial Junior Hockey League victory of October.

The Whalers made sure there was no doubt about the win, their first since Sept. 17, as they dumped the Goderich Flyers 13-1 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday to end an 11-game winless streak.

The Whalers led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 10-1 after the second. They had scored three goals in a span of 1:06 in the first period and four goals in exactly nine minutes in the second period and two goals in 49 seconds midway through the third.

Boden Brimmell had a hat trick for the Whalers while Ty Anselmini and Jett Morningstar tallied twice apiece. Single goals were added by Joshua Russell, Tyler Ewald, Nolan Burnside, Noah Sabourin, Jacob Lesser and Keegan Clarke. Kyle Parsons and Anselmini each had three assists while JJ Lavigne and Evan Ahearn each had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Lesser, Ethan Meeker, Burnside, Zach Nault, Morningstar, Clarke and Sabourin.

Kyle Smeltzer had an unassisted goal for Goderich.

Fergus outshot Goderich 43-15 and went 1-for-3 on their power play. Goderich was scoreless on a single power play.

Jacob McKenney had 14 saves for the Whalers.

Christian DeJong played the first and third periods for Goderich and he made 23 saves while Logan Bromley had seven saves in the second period.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 11-0-0-1 and are followed by the Kincardine Bulldogs (8-3-1-2), Mount Forest Patriots (8-4-1-0), Walkerton Capitals (8-4-1-0), Wingham Ironmen (6-7-1-0), Mitchell Hawks (4-7-2-0), the Whalers (3-7-2-2) and Goderich (2-10-0-1).

The Whalers are to play the Kincardine Bulldogs at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre Friday at 8:30 p.m.
