Fergus Whalers downed by division-leading Hanover

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers yielded a pair of goals in each of the first two periods as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Pollock Division-leading Hanover Barons Sunday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

Hanover led 2-0 at the end of the first period and all of the scoring in the game had been completed by the end of the second.

Ethan Meeker struck for the lone goal for the Whalers midway through the second. Nolan Burnside and Ryan McDougall assisted on the goal.

Curtis Arnold had a pair of goals for Hanover while Aiden Stanley and Patrick Brown added a goal apiece. Kyle Maloney assisted on three of the goals while Eliott McCarey had two assists and Brown and Drayton Howell each had one assist.

The Barons outshot Fergus 28-24 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Hanover on three power plays and the Whalers on seven.

Bradley Boville had 24 saves for Fergus and Lander Hartley had 23 for Hanover.

Hanover leads the division at 13-0-0-2 and are followed by the Mount Forest Patriots (12-4-1-0), Kincardine Bulldogs (10-3-1-4), Walkerton Capitals (9-5-1-1), Wingham Ironmen (7-9-1-1), Mitchell Hawks (5-9-2-1), the Whalers (3-10-2-2) and Goderich Flyers (2-13-0-1).

The Whalers are to host Mitchell at the Arthur and Area Community Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m.
