Fergus Whalers drop first two preseason matches

KINCARDINE – The Fergus Whalers suffered losses in their first two PJHL preseason games Saturday.

Competing in the Kincardine Bulldogs preseason tournament, the Whalers were defeated 6-2 by Kincardine and 5-1 by the Wellesley Applejacks.

The Whalers scored single goals in the first and second periods against Kincardine while the Bulldogs secured the win with three third-period scores.

Cameron Sultana and Ryan McDougall scored power-play goals for Fergus while Adam Nichol assisted on both goals. Jack McDonald also had an assist.

Kincardine received single goals from Gavin Downs, Nolan MacKinnon, Nolan Janes, Bryce Martin, Tyler Wagler and Liam Colhoun. Kyle Dolmage had three assists while Owen Breen had two and Cooper Schneider, Gavin Gibbons, Jordan Beisel, Colhoun, Chad Lawrence and Blake Hellyer each had one.

The Bulldogs outshot the Whalers 40-17.

Jacob McKenney had 34 saves for Fergus while Rowen Cherrett had 15 for Kincardine.

The Whalers were 2-for-5 on their power play while the Bulldogs were 1-for-2.

In the other game, the Whalers scored their lone goal with 25 seconds to go in the game.

Eric Henderson scored for Fergus with help from Boden Brimmell and Ethan Meeker.

Dimitri Eleftheriadis tallied twice for Wellesley while Curtis Butler, Owen O’Donnell and Roenick Jackielaszek added single goals. Getting one assist apiece were Nolan Karger, Isaac Westlake, Carson Wickie, Liam Wadel, Logan Crans and Rowan Aljoe.

The Applejacks, who outshot Fergus 44-19, went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Whalers went 0-for-5.

Bradley Boville had 39 saves for Fergus while Travis Jansen had 18 for Wellesley.

The Whalers are to play the Hespeler Shamrocks at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and the North Middlesex Stars at North Middlesex Tuesday at 8:20 p.m.
