Fergus Whalers dropped by Hanover Barons

HANOVER – The Fergus Whalers surrendered five goals in the first period in a PJHL game they dropped 8-2 to the Hanover Barons Friday night at Hanover’s P and H Centre.

The Whalers scored their two goals 2:09 apart early in the third after Hanover had scored all eight of its goals.

The loss was the first one-sided setback for the Whalers in their inaugural season. Previous largest margin in a loss was three goals in a 4-1 win for the Wingham Ironmen in Wingham Sept. 22.

Hanover led 5-0 after the first period and 7-0 after the second.

Ethan Meeker and Nolan Burnside scored for Fergus while Burnside, Tyler Ewald, Graham Sutcliffe and Jett Morningstar each had an assist.

Patrick Brown scored four consecutive goals for Hanover and he also had two assists while Wyatt Cayley added a pair of goals and Nick Freiburger and Dylan Becker scored once each. Kyle Maloney assisted on six of the goals while Spencer Davidson and Payton McIsaac each had two assists and Aaron Dukeshire, Brody Verbeek, Cam Angst and Ryan Colquhoun had one apiece.

The Barons outshot Fergus 42-31 thanks to a 19-8 margin in the first period. Hanover went 3-for-6 on the power play while the Whalers went 1-for-8.

Bradley Boville gave up the first-period goals on 19 shots for the Whalers while Jacob McKenney took over for the final two periods and he had 23 saves. Max Wright had 29 saves for Wingham.

Hanover leads the Pollock Division at 6-0-0-1 while the Whalers are at 2-2-1-2. The Barons are followed by the Walkerton Capitals (6-1-0-0), Kincardine Bulldogs (3-2-1-1), Mount Forest Patriots (3-2-1-0), Wingham (3-3-1-0), the Whalers, the Mitchell Hawks (2-4-1-0) and Goderich Flyers (0-6-0-0).

The game was the first of three consecutive road games for the Whalers who are to play at Goderich Saturday. Game time is 8 p.m. at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre. They’re also to play at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
