Fergus Whalers edged in overtime by Goderich Flyers

GODERICH – The Fergus Whalers gave up a goal at 5:11 of overtime as they suffered a 2-1 loss to the Goderich Flyers in PJHL play Saturday at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre.

The game was the fifth one of the eight games in the Whalers’ inaugural season to go into overtime. They won one, lost two and tied two of those games that needed extra time.

Saturday, Tyler Ewald scored at 3:05 of the first period. Nolan Burnside assisted on the goal.

Austin Aldrich tied the game with a shorthanded goal for Goderich midway through the second period.

Cohen Lesouder scored the winner for the Flyers while Rowan Alexander picked up an assist.

The teams each had 36 shots on net and neither scored a power-play goal. The Whalers had seven power plays and Goderich had 10.

Jacob McKenney had 34 saves for Fergus while Logan Bromley had 35 for Goderich.

The win was the first of the season for Goderich while Fergus stands at 2-2-2-2.

The game was the second of three consecutive road games for the Whalers. They’re to play the Kincardine Bulldogs (4-2-1-1) at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Whalers are to host the Mount Forest Patriots (4-2-1-0) Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. Game time is 3 p.m.
