Fergus Whalers extend lead in playoff series to 2-0

WALKERTON – The Fergus Whalers scored the first two goals of the game and never relinquished the lead as they downed the Walkerton Capitals 5-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Friday at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The Whalers scored the lone goal of the first period and added their second game early in the second. However, Walkerton tallied 1:07 after that before Fergus restored its two-goal advantage 32 seconds later to lead 3-1 at the end of the second.

Henry Turner connected for a pair of goals for Fergus while singletons were added by Jacob Lesser, Mark Pyzowski and Ty Anselmini. Anselmini also had three assists while Kyle Parsons had two and Jett Morningstar, Joshua Russell, JJ Lavigne, Turner and Boden Brimmell each had one.

Walkerton’s goals were scored by Chase Lorenz and Nathan Doran while single assists were awarded to Doran, Graham Gateman and Markus Grajnar-Ptok.

The Whalers outshot the Capitals 33-24 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while Walkerton went 1-for-5.

Bradley Boville had 22 saves for Fergus and Vance Meyer had 28 for Walkerton.

The win gives the Whalers a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Pollock Division quarter-finals.

They’re to meet again Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex at 3 p.m.
