Fergus Whalers fall to fast-starting Walkerton

WALKERTON – The Walkerton Capitals struck for two goals in each of the first two periods as they dropped the Fergus Whalers 5-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday at the Walkerton Community Centre.

Keegan Clarke scored an unassisted goal for Fergus with 3:19 to go in the game and it came after the hosts netted their fifth goal of the match.

Chase Lorenz had a pair of goals for Walkerton while Keegan Fischer, Owen Troyer and Nathan Doran also scored. Troyer and Adam MacRobbie each had two assists while Sam Shakes, Markus Grajnar-Ptok, Fischer and Lorenz had one apiece.

The Capitals outshot the Whalers 35-32 and went 3-for-7 on their power play while Fergus was scoreless on three power plays.

Bradley Boville had 30 saves for the Whalers and Vance Meyer had 31 for Walkerton.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 11-0-0-1 while the Kincardine Bulldogs are second at 8-3-1-2 and Walkerton and Mount Forest Patriots are tied for third with identical 8-4-1-0 records. Wingham Ironmen are fifth at 6-7-1-0, Mitchell Hawks sixth at 4-7-2-0, the Whalers seventh at 2-7-2-2 and Goderich Flyers eighth at 2-9-0-1.

The Whalers are to host Goderich Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
