Fergus Whalers hit late to edge Walkerton Capitals

FERGUS – Andrew McClure’s goal with 12 seconds to go in the third period gave the Fergus Whalers a 4-3 triumph over the Walkerton Capitals in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

Fergus led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second. The hosts never trailed in the game.

Keegan Clarke, Boden Brimmell, Joshua Russell and McClure scored the goals for the Whalers while Ty Anselmini had three assists, Kyle Parsons had two and JJ Lavigne had one.

Walkerton received goals from Nathan Doran, Austin Drew and Josh Johnston while Ethan Kerr, Brayden Harrow, Daniel Norton and Nate Binkley each had an assist.

The Whalers were outshot 30-20 by the Capitals and went 1-for-2 on their power play while Walkerton was scoreless on four power plays.

Richard Cui had 27 saves for Fergus and Vance Meyer had 16 for Walkerton.
