Fergus Whalers in OT again, edged by Walkerton Capitals

FERGUS – More of the same for the Fergus Whalers as they went to overtime again in their PJHL match at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday.

However, they were edged 3-2 by the Walkerton Capitals this time.

The Whalers have played six games in their inaugural season and four have gone to overtime.

The scoring for Fergus was limited to a span of six and a half minutes in the second period as Ty Anselmini and Keegan Clarke scored for the hosts to put them up 2-1 at the time. Mark Pyzowski and Kyle Parsons each had an assist.

Sam Shakes scored in the first period for Walkerton while Carter Moran tied the score in the second, just about five minutes after the Whalers had gone ahead.

The third period was a scoreless affair while Nathan Doran netted the winner after almost four minutes of extra time.

Graham Gateman assisted on all three goals for the Capitals while Shakes had two assists and Moran had one.

Walkerton outshot the Whalers 43-35 and neither team managed a power-play goal, although penalties were minimal. Fergus had two power plays in the game while Walkerton had one.

Bradley Boville had 40 saves for Fergus and former Mount Forest goalkeeper Vance Meyer had 33 for Walkerton.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 5-0-0-1 while Walkerton is second at 5-1-0-0 and the Whalers are third at 2-1-1-2 and they’re followed by Wingham Ironmen at 3-3-0-0, Kincardine Bulldogs at 2-2-1-1, Mount Forest Patriots at 2-2-1-0, Mitchell Hawks at 2-3-1-0 and Goderich Flyers at 0-5-0-0.

Next three games for Fergus are on the road as the Whalers are to play the Barons in Hanover Friday at 8 p.m., the Flyers in Goderich Saturday at 8 p.m. and the Bulldogs in Kincardine Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
