Fergus Whalers net five in third to leave Mitchell behind

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers struck for their third victory of the month as they dropped the Mitchell Hawks 7-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Whalers broke open a close game with five goals in the third period. They had led 2-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second.

Andrew McClure had a hat trick for Fergus while Jacob Lesser added a pair of goals and Henry Turner and Ethan Meeker scored once each. Jack McDonald, Kyle Parsons, Tyler Ewald and Ty Anselmini each had two assists while Zach Nault, Mark Pyzowski and Meeker each had one.

Jonathan Tenhag scored for Mitchell with help from Ben Tenhag and Cole Baier.

The Whalers outshot Mitchell 57-37 and went 3-for-12 on their power play while Mitchell was 1-for-3.

The win followed an 11-1 victory over the Goderich Flyers Jan. 6 and an 8-4 doubling of the Walkerton Capitals Jan. 7.

The Whalers (13-12-3-2) are to play the Mount Forest Patriots (23-5-2-0) at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex Saturday at 8 p.m. and host the Wingham Ironmen (12-14-2-1) next Sunday at 3 p.m.
