Fergus Whalers net six in second to double Walkerton

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers extended their winning streak to four games as they doubled the Walkerton Capitals 8-4 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Whalers rebounded from a two-goal deficit after the opening minute of the second period with six goals in that period to take control of the game.

Walkerton outshot Fergus 23-7 in the first period and scored the period’s lone goal. The Whalers led 6-3 at the second period and outshot the Capitals 28-15 after the first period.

Ty Anselmini had two goals and two assists for Fergus while Zach Nault, Tyler Ewald, Andrew McClure, Jacob Lesser, Mark Pyzowski and Ethan Meeker netted single goals. JJ Lavigne, Nault, Ewald and Boden Brimmell each had two assists while single assists were registered by Conner Bradley, Jett Morningstar and Joshua Russell.

Brayden Harrow struck for a pair of goals while singletons were added by Nathan Doran and Markus Grajnar-Ptok. Single assists were awarded to Doran, Owen Troyer, Keegan Fischer, Chase Lorenz and Graham Gateman.

The Capitals outshot the Whalers 38-35 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Fergus went 3-for-5.

Bradley Boville had 34 saves for Fergus while Vance Meyer had 19 saves in the first two periods and Noah Lundgren had eight saves in the third.

The result leaves the Capitals and Whalers tied for fourth in the Pollock Division. At 13-12-1-2, Walkerton has a game in hand on the Whalers who are at 12-12-3-2. They’re two points up on the Wingham Ironmen who are at 12-13-2-1 and also have a game in hand on Fergus.

The Whalers are to play the Kincardine Bulldogs (16-10-1-5) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre and host the Mitchell Hawks (8-17-2-2) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
