Fergus Whalers net three in a row to topple Wingham

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers struck for the final three goals of the game as they downed the Wingham Ironmen 5-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Whalers never trailed in their final home game of the regular season. After a scoreless first period, Fergus led 3-2 at the end of the second.

Dakota Dahmer, Jared Bettonvil, Jett Morningstar, Kyle Parsons and Boden Brimmell scored a goal apiece for the Whalers while Tyler Ewald, Morningstar and Zach Nault each had two assists and Jack Webley, Parsons and Joshua Russell had one each.

Brandon Bishop and Jesse Coombs each had a goal and an assist for Wingham while Tyson Fischer also had an assist.

The Ironmen outshot the Whalers 35-27, but were scoreless on four power plays while the Whalers went 1-for-5 on their power play.

Kaleb Meyer had 22 saves for Fergus while Jacob McKenney had 33 saves for Wingham.

The result leaves the Whalers fourth in the Pollock Division at 20-16-3-2 (W-L-OTL-T) and Wingham sixth at 16-21-3-1.

The Whalers are to complete their inaugural season Saturday against the third-place Kincardine Bulldogs (22-12-2-5) at the Lucknow arena.

The final positions for each team in the division are known which makes the pairings of all of the division quarter-finals known. The Whalers are to play the fifth-place Walkerton Capitals in a best-of-seven series. Dates for the games in the series have to be decided.
