Fergus Whalers nip Hespeler Shamrocks for preseason win

CAMBRIDGE – A second-period goal by Boden Brimmell proved to be the winner as the Fergus Whalers collected their first Provincial Junior Hockey League preseason victory Sunday as they edged the Hespeler Shamrocks 3-2 at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Whalers never trailed in the game as they led 2-1 at the end of the first period before they added the lone second-period goal. Hespeler cut the gap to a single goal early in the third, but couldn’t net the equalizer.

Evan Ahearn and Ryan McDougall added the other goals for Fergus. Assists went to J.J. Lavigne, Noah Sabourin and Keegan Clarke.

Julian Attard and Andrew Harris scored for Hespeler while Justin George, Daniel Tremblay, Boden White and James Ramani each had an assist.

The Shamrocks outshot the Whalers 32-31 and went 0-for-7 on the power play while Fergus was scoreless on four power plays.

Jacob McKenney had 30 saves in the Fergus net while Lucas Hillert had 28 in the Hespeler net.

The Whalers are to complete their preseason Tuesday with a game against the North Middlesex Stars at North Middlesex. Game time is 8:20 p.m.

Sunday’s game completed the preseason for Hespeler and the Shamrocks had a pair of losses.

The Shamrocks are to open their regular season Friday against the Woodstock Navy Vets at the Woodstock District Community Complex. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

The Whalers are to open their inaugural regular season Saturday against the Mount Forest Patriots at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex at 8 p.m.
