Fergus Whalers triple Goderich to extend win streak

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers extended their Provincial Junior Hockey League win streak to four games as they tripled the Goderich Flyers 6-2 Friday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Whalers yielded the first and last goals of the game, but had six consecutive goals sandwiched between those goals.

The hosts led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-1 after the second.

Aidan Mead, Henry Turner, Tyler Ewald, Ty Anselmini, Noah Sabourin and Boden Brimmell scored a goal apiece for the Whalers while Anselmini had three assists and Turner had two. Getting one assist apiece were Mark Pyzowski, Ethan Meeker, Brimmell, Kyle Parsons, Andrew McClure and Keegan Clarke.

Jared Houghton scored both goals for Goderich while single assists were awarded to Trent Carter, Leland Weber and Mitchell Hodges.

The Whalers had at least 20 shots in each period as they outshot the Flyers 66-47. Fergus was 0-for-4 on the power play while Goderich was 1-for-7.

Jacob McKenney had 45 saves in the Fergus net while Logan Bromley had 60 for Goderich.

The win streak for Fergus includes a 2-1 win over the Walkerton Capitals in Walkerton Nov. 24, a 4-1 win over the Wingham Ironmen in Fergus Nov. 26 and a 2-1 win over the Kincardine Bulldogs in Fergus last Sunday.

Fergus is seventh in the eight-team Pollock Division, but have closed back up to the pack in its inaugural season. Hanover Barons lead at 18-2-0-2 and are followed by the Mount Forest Patriots at 17-4-1-0, Kincardine at 11-8-1-4, Walkerton at 11-9-1-1, Wingham at 10-11-2-1, Mitchell Hawks at 8-11-2-2, the Whalers at 7-11-2-2 and Goderich at 2-19-0-2.

The Whalers are to complete a three-game homestand Sunday when they’re to host Hanover at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. Game time is 3 p.m.
