Fergus Whalers work overtime again for another deadlock

HANOVER – The Fergus Whalers are displaying a knack of getting games into overtime in their inaugural season in the Provincial Junior Hockey League season.

For the second time in a week, the Whalers battled a PJHL opponent to a standoff and that included going scoreless through the seven-minute, three-on-three overtime period, as they knotted the Hanover Barons 1-1 at Hanover’s P and H Centre Friday night.

It was the third time in their five-game history that the Whalers had gone into OT as they won their very first game 2-1 in OT over the Mount Forest Patriots Sept. 16.

Friday, the Whalers scored on a power-play at 6:50 of the first period and that stood as the game’s lone goal until the hosts pulled even with 3:16 to go in the third.

Evan Ahearn scored for Fergus with help from Ethan Meeker and Ty Anselmini.

Aaron Dukeshire collected the tying goal for Hanover while Eliott McCarey and Ryan Colquhoun set up the goal.

The Barons outshot the Whalers 49-30 mainly due to a 20-8 advantage in the first period. Fergus went 1-for-11 on its power play and held Hanover scoreless on seven power plays.

Bradley Boville had 48 saves for the Whalers while Lander Hartley had 29 for Hanover.

Hanover remains unbeaten with the tie. The Barons lead the Pollock Division at 4-0-0-1 and are followed by the Walkerton Capitals at 4-1-0-0, Wingham Ironmen at 3-2-0-0, the Whalers at 2-1-0-2, Mitchell Hawks at 2-3-0-0, Kincardine Bulldogs at 1-1-1-1, Mount Forest at 0-2-1-0 and Goderich Flyers at 0-4-0-0.

The Whalers are to host Walkerton at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday at 3 p.m.
