Field hockey Gryphs edged by East-leading York

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 2-1 loss to the York Lions in their OUA field hockey home opener Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The game was the first league match ever for the Gryphs at the soccer complex after playing previous on campus home games at Varsity Field and, in days long gone, at the grass field near the parking lot by soccer complex. The switch in home fields for the field hockey team was made necessary when a new turf field was put in Varsity Field in the spring and it would’ve slowed the game down too much.

York rallied for the win, scoring their first goal late in the third quarter and their second goal early in the fourth quarter.

Eva Cuddihy had given the Gryphs the early lead when she scored in the game’s 10th minute. Abigail Warriner assisted on the play.

York came back with a pair of unassisted goals by Juliet Redelaar.

The Lions outshot the Gryphs 10-2 while Guelph took 12 of the game’s 17 penalty corners. York was called for 32 fouls, six more than the Gryphs.

Maryam Maamoun was in net for the Gryphs while Jade Lew was in net for the Lions.

The result leaves the Gryphs fourth in the West Division at 0-2-1 while York leads the East Division at 3-0-0.

The Gryphs are to host the McGill Martlets, fourth in the East at 0-3-0, Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
