First-place Welland takes delayed match from Royals

GUELPH – The league-leading Welland Jackfish struck for six runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 9-6 victory over the Guelph Royals in the resumption of a delayed Intercounty Baseball League game Tuesday at Hastings Stadium.

The match had started June 13 before rain forced a suspension in the fourth inning with Welland leading 4-2 and the Royals having a runner (Ethan Hammond) on first with nobody out and a 2-1 count on Conner Morro.

The six eighth-inning runs were scored after the Royals had recorded a pair the second out. Welland had two runners on base – Steven Moretto hit a single and Caleb Feuerstake was struck by a Yomar Concepcion pitch. McCoy Pearce and Luis Jean hit back-to-back singles to score two runs before a wild pitch and a walk to Ethan Hunt loaded the bases and brought an end to Concepcion’s outing.

Brandon Deans relieved and walked Gianfranco Morello to score a run before a double by Matteo Porcellato scored three more runs. Deans got James Smibert to ground out to first to end the uprising.

Welland had opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Royals got both runs back in the bottom of the inning. The Jackfish added a run in the top of the fifth, but the Royals shot ahead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth, the Royals loaded the bases with nobody out as Malik Collymore and Corey Morro hit consecutive singles and Brando Leroux was struck by a pitch. Hammond’s groundout to the pitcher brought in a run while Conner Morro doubled to score two before stealing third. J.D. Williams was walked and the fourth run of the inning came in on a single by Justin Interisano.

The Royals clouted 10 hits in the game with Conner Morro hitting a double and a single. Noah Roberts also hit a double while Leroux, Hammond, Williams, Interisano, Darias Barlas, Collymore and Corey Morro each hit a single.

Pearce led Welland at the plate with five singles while Porcellato added a double and a single. Getting one single apiece were Moretto, Hogan Brown, Sam Cawker and Jean.

Concepcion took the loss for the Royals as he gave up eight runs, seven earned, off eight hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Deans gave up an earned run off three hits and a walk in the final 1 1/3 innings. He had a strikeout.

Scott Gillespie had started and gone three innings for Welland, yielding two earned runs off a hit and a walk and he had three strikeouts.

Brett Lawson took over when the game resumed Tuesday and he pitched 1 1/3 innings and was followed to the mound by winner Brandon Underhill (3 2/3 innings) and Deivy Mendez (1 inning) who picked up his league-best seventh save of the season. Deans is second on the list with three.

Lawson gave up four earned runs off five hits and a walk while Underhill yielded three hits and Mendez surrendered a single hit. Underhill had four strikeouts, Mendez had two and Lawson had one.

Welland leads the league at 15-6 while the Barrie Baycats are second at 13-6, Kitchener Panthers are third at 13-7, Hamilton Cardinals are fourth at 12-8 and Toronto Maple Leafs are fifth at 11-9. It’s a gap back to the Royals at Guelph 7-13 while the London Majors are seventh at 6-12 and Brantford Red Sox are eighth at 2-18.

The Royals are to play the Baycats at Barrie Thursday starting at 7:35 p.m. and then battle London twice on the weekend as they’re to play at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and at London’s Labatt Park Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
