Football Gryphons bounce back with win over McMaster

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons had no lingering effects from their one-sided loss a week earlier to the Laurier Golden Hawks as they secured a 21-13 victory over the McMaster Marauders Saturday at Ron Joyce Stadium with a touchdown with 66 seconds to go in the game.

Vyshonne Janusas caught a nine-yard TD toss from quarterback Tristan Aboud to complete a five-play drive that covered 75 yards in 52 seconds of game time. Gabe Canabrava kicked the convert to complete the scoring.

After trailing 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Gryphs shot ahead 11-3 by halftime and held a 14-10 lead after the third quarter.

McMaster place kicker Michael Horvat booted a 24-yard field goal to narrow the gap to a single point at 14-13 with just under six minutes to play, but the Gryphs added the late TD to retain the victory.

Marshall McCray had the other TD for the Gryphs as he scored on a five-yard run with four minutes to go in the first half.

Canabrava collected all the other points for Guelph as he had field goals of 39 and 17 yards, a rouge on a missed field goal and a convert.

Keagan Hall scored a TD on a six-yard run midway through the third quarter for the Marauders. Horvat added a 10-yard field goal and a convert.

Aboud completed 18 of 24 pass attempts for 150 yards. He was sacked twice.

Donavin Milloy led the rushers with 11 carries for 106 yards while Craig Sherrington had six carries for 44 yards and McCray had six carries for 20 yards.

Janusas caught six passes for 48 yards while Kaine Stevenson hauled in three passes for 28 yards. Milloy also gained 28 yards on two receptions while Jarod Tessier had two catches for 23 yards.

Jevaun Jacobsen had 10 tackles while Brandon Ferigo had 9.5 tackles and Braeden MacDougall and Jack Cobb each had nine.

The Gryphs recovered a fumble by the Marauders while Jacobsen and Devynn Cromwell each had an interception.

Anakin Guthrie returned four punts for 46 yards and Janusas returned two kickoffs for 66 yards.

In other games Saturday, the Western Mustangs slipped by the Queen’s Gaels 32-27, Windsor Lancers outlasted the Ottawa Gee-Gees 42-31, Laurier downed the Waterloo Warriors 47-20 and the Carleton Ravens dumped the York Lions 52-0.

Western, Windsor and Laurier are all tied for first with 4-0 records while Ottawa’s at 2-1 and the Gryphs are at 2-2. Carleton and Queen’s are both at 1-2 while McMaster and Waterloo are both at 1-3. Toronto Varsity Blues are at 0-3 and York trails at 0-4.

Next up for the Gryphs is their Homecoming Game against York Saturday. Game time at Alumni Stadium is 1 p.m.
