Former United striker’s goal sinks Guelph United

WOODBRIDGE – Striker Tomasz Skublak came back to haunt his former team Saturday as Scrosoppi FC of Milton edged Guelph United 1-0 in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier play on Canada Day at the Ontario Soccer Stadium.

Skublak tallied in the 35th minute of the game to give Scrosoppi the win. A former Guelph Gryphon, Skublak had 15 goals in 20 regular-season games with United in its first two seasons (2021 & 2022) and had a goal in two playoff games in 2021.

Andreas Vaikla had the clean sheet in net for Scrosoppi while Carter Robart was in goal for United.

The setback, the second of the season for United, puts an end to a three-game winning streak for the locals as they had scored three consecutive one-goal victories having beaten Vaughan Azzurri 1-0 at the Centennial Bowl June 18, 1-0 over Darby FC at the Whitby Soccer Centre Dome June 23 and Windsor City FC 3-2 at Centennial Bowl last Tuesday.

Robart recorded the two shutouts in that streak to give him five on the season.

Dion Stergiotis scored the goal against Azzurri while Milan Beader tallied against Darby. Jared Agyemang, Beader and Leo Shrimpton had the goals against Windsor City with Windsor City getting both of its goals in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Saturday’s game was also the first of four consecutive road games for United as they’re to play Master’s FC (1-9-1) at Scarborough’s L’Amoreaux Sports Complex next Saturday, Burlington SC (8-4-1) at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School July 16 and Simcoe County Rovers (7-3-1) at Georgian College’s J.C. Massie Field in Barrie July 23.

United does not have a home game on its schedule in July. Next home game is slated for Aug. 1 against Hamilton United at Centennial Bowl. Game time is 8 p.m.

United is third in the 21-team league with an 8-2-3 record while Scrosoppi is second at 10-2-0. Blue Devils FC of Oakville lead at 9-0-3 while Burlington SC is fourth and Sigma FC of Mississauga is fifth at 7-3-3.
