Four-goal streak sparks Gryphon lacrosse men to first win

WATERLOO – Four consecutive goals by the Guelph Gryphons sparked them to their first win of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association victory of the season.

Those goals helped the Gryphs slip by the Laurier Golden Hawks 8-6 at Laurier’s Alumni Field Sunday.

Laurier scored the lone goal of the first quarter and led 2-1 when the Gryphs started their four-goal run with seven minutes to go in the first half. Fourth goal of the run came early in the third quarter.

Guelph led 4-2 at halftime and 6-3 after the third quarter. The Golden Hawks made the score close with a pair of goals in the final minute of the game.

Robbie Baxter led the Gryphs with two goals and two assists while Liam Ashton and Ethan Lee also scored twice apiece. Single goals were added by Gavin Thibeault, Kyle Detweiler and Matt Allen. Nick Nigro had an assist.

Liam Glover had two goals and an assist for Laurier while Zachary Gurd had a goal and an assist and Aiden Macdonald collected two assists. Other goals were scored by Declan McEvoy, Thomas Macdonald and Isaac Squire-Hill.

Shots on goal were not reported.

Logan Pagano was in net for Guelph while Dante Mancini tended net for Laurier.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 1-1 and Laurier at 0-1.

McMaster Marauders lead the West Division at 2-0 while Western Mustangs, Toronto Varsity Blues and Brock Badgers are all at 1-0. Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs are both at 0-2.

The Gryphs are to host Laurentian in their home opener Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
