Fourth straight loss by Royals is Barrie’s fifth straight win

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals were limited to four hits as they were handed a 10-2 setback by the Barrie Baycats in Intercounty Baseball League play Tuesday at Hastings Stadium.

Barrie had a pair of four-run innings in the victory.

The Baycats scored all 10 of their runs before the Royals managed to get their two in the bottom of the eighth inning. Barrie had scored four runs in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and four in the top of the eighth.

Barrie replaced starting pitcher Juan Benitez for the eighth with Adam Khan and the Royals greeted Khan with their two runs. Noah Roberts was walked and with one out went to second on a single by Darius Barlas. Barlas was out at second on a fielder’s choice hit by Corey Morro that sent Roberts to third. Roberts scored on a wild pitch and Morro went to second before Brando Leroux was walked. Corey Morro scored on a single by Ethan Hammond and Conner Morro was walked to load the bases, but the Royals left the bases loaded.

Hammond, Conner Morro, Chris Robinson and Barlas each hit a single for the Royals.

Yomar Concepcion started and took the loss for Guelph. He yielded six runs, five earned, off five hits and two walks in six innings. He had five strikeouts.

Brandon Deans relieved for the final three innings and he gave up four unearned runs off four hits and three walks. He had three strikeouts.

Carson Burns hit a double and single for Barrie while Hayden Jaco hit a double and Noel McGarry-Doyle, Ryan Rijo, Royce Ando, Domenico Morea, Victor Plaz and Tyler Plumpton each hit a single.

Benitez was the winner as he kept the Royals scoreless in his seven-inning stint. He gave up two hits and a walk and had four strikeouts while Khan surrendered two earned runs off two hits and three walks in the inning he pitched. He had a strikeout. Aidan Rossel pitched a perfect ninth for Barrie.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the Royals and left them at 4-11 while Barrie recorded its fifth consecutive win to improve to 9-5.
