Gargoyles complete season with loss to Toronto Eagles

TORONTO – The Grand River Gargoyles wrapped up their AFL Ontario Australian football season Saturday with a 79-23 loss to the Toronto Eagles at Humber Park.

The result left the Gargs fifth in the eight-team league’s final standings with a 5-5-0 mark. Top four qualified for the playoffs and the Toronto Dingos were fourth at 6-4-0.

The Gargs defeated the Dingos 65-39 May 23 at Margaret Greene Park in the lone meeting of the season between the two teams.

In order to get a 10-game regular season, teams play four teams once each and the other three teams twice apiece. The teams the Gargs played twice each were the second-place Eagles (8-2-0), the seventh-place Toronto Central Blues (2-8-0) and the eighth-place High Park Demons (0-10-0). They lost both games to the Eagles, but won both games against both the Blues and the Demons.

Scorers for the Gargs in Saturday’s loss to the Eagles were not reported.

Jordan Van Ross had four goals for the victors while Jay Himat added three, Aaron Falcioni had two and Kevin Minaker and Garrett Reynolds added one apiece.

Himat finished as the league’s leading scorer with 35 goals while Falcioni had 29. Ben Knowles of the Gargs had 28 while captain Jeremy Schwartzentruber had 11 and Stephen McLeod added nine and Josh Woods had seven.
