Gargoyles dump Dingos in Australian football opener

GUELPH – The Grand River Gargoyles opened their AFL Ontario season with a convincing victory over the Toronto Dingos Saturday at Margaret Greene Park.

The Gargs won every quarter on their way to a 179-76 triumph.

The locals scored four goals in the opening quarter to grab an early 24-1 lead. They extended it to 62-13 at halftime and 114-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The hosts had 10 goals in all as Ben Knowles struck for four of them while Ian Alexander and Josh Woods had two apiece. Getting single goals were added by Josh Berry and Terry Schwartzentruber.

Brad Wooten had two goals for the Dingos while Gary Conlon, Leighlan Dowling and Michael Ladd collected one apiece.

The Gargs are to host the Toronto Eagles next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Margaret Greene Park. The Eagles had a bye on the opening weekend.

Grand River is also to host the Toronto Central Blues, another team that had a first-round bye, June 10 at Margaret Greene Park starting at 12 p.m.
